It took me a bit to be sure Otter was a person rather than an animal, but in some cultures it would be typical to name someone for an animal.

I'm getting a sort of Edgar Rice Burroughs "The Land That Time Forgot" feeling from this-- modern, but crossed with elements of the prehistoric past. Almost a parallel evolutionary course to something different from the now.
